Universe in Motion: Shimmering goldstone dial
With the HAMATIC Astral, this marks the debut of a goldstone dial for Moritz Grossmann’s watches. Regardless of the viewing angle, the goldstone dial exhibits a subtle yet captivating variation. The array of luminous dots, set against a midnight blue backdrop in hues of gold and blue, evoke the image of the galaxy with its myriad of stars and cherished moments collected over time.
The galaxy-esque goldstone dial acts as a symbolic portal, offering a simultaneous glimpse into the past, present, and future—making it the perfect representation of
Sincere Fine Watches’ 70 years of history and rich heritage.
The making of goldstone: Crafted through the art of glassmaking
The manufacturing process of goldstone mirrors the rich tradition of watchmaking itself. Discovered serendipitously in 17th-century Venice, goldstone is produced by heating glass with the addition of copper, carefully controlled to prevent overheating. The result: tiny crystalline clusters, reminiscent of glitter, embedded within the material. Its versatility in cutting, polishing, or casting makes goldstone an ideal choice for watch dials.
In this timepiece, the goldstone perfectly complements its vintage design, radiating an aura of elegance and refinement. Enhanced by gold-tone appliqués and a vintage
“M. Grossmann” logo, the watch features meticulously crafted rose gold poiré-shaped hands. Its aesthetic and cohesive design language pay homage to the illustrious history of the German manufacture, evolving with modern machinery while remaining rooted in captivating tradition.
Inspired by the World’s First Automatic Movement
Throughout history, many have been intrigued by the concept of perpetual motion that is not propelled by any external energy source. In the realm of horology, this fascination found expression in the ingenious utilization of kinetic energy from wearers. Dating back to the 18th century, the pioneers of watchmaking introduced the world’s first automatic watches by ingeniously employing a pendulum in the form of a hammer equipped with a heavy head to harness the kinetic energy generated through the wearer’s movement.
Drawing inspiration from this traditional concept, engineers at Grossmann paid homage to horological heritage with the introduction of the calibre 106.0. This remarkable movement not only showcases the intricate mechanics synonymous with the brand’s craftsmanship, but also revives the aesthetic allure of the hammer-style pendulum system. Encased within an elaborately designed frame, meticulously finished, and left open in the center, the calibre 106.0 unveils the mesmerizing interplay of the hammer spring and the striking gold hammer head.
Through the transparent sapphire crystal display back, observers of the timepiece can witness the rhythmic dance of the pendulum system—a testament to Moritz Grossmann’s commitment to both innovation and tradition.
Form and Function: Calibre 106.0
The bidirectional automatic hammer mechanism of the HAMATIC movement ensures exceptionally efficient winding, delivering consistent winding power for a highly precise and reliable movement. With a power reserve of 72 hours when fully wound, the timepiece can autonomously run for an entire weekend or three days with minimal movement from the wearer.
One key advantage of the hammer-style pendulum system lies in the strategic placement of the hammer’s center of mass relative to its rotational axis. The Calibre 106.0 has been intentionally designed with this layout to generate significant torque, enabling it to exert a potent force on the spring. Even with minimal movement—just a five-degree shift from its origin or a two-millimeter oscillation—the kinetic energy is efficiently stored in the mainspring of the movement.
Crafted by Moritz Grossmann, this mechanism has been optimized to capture various forms of movement. Stronger movements, characterized by larger deflections of the hammer body, are carefully attenuated by intricately crafted fixed end springs within the hammer frame. Meanwhile, subtler movements result in a smaller swing radius, significantly minimizing friction loss and ensuring more efficient energy transmission.
In addition to its self-winding capability, the watch features a manual winding function facilitated by a yoke winder mounted on a separate bridge. This design ensures that the manual winder always remains disengaged from the ratchet wheel when the HAMATIC system is activated by motion. On the other hand, when in manual winding mode, the reduction gear is isolated from the ratchet wheel by the backstop ratchet.
With the Moritz Grossmann HAMATIC Astral Sincere Platinum Jubilee Edition, the serial number is engraved on the back of the rose gold case by hand. The timepiece comes with a dark blue strap made from alligator leather and has Sincere’s 70th anniversary logo engraved on the open caseback.
The 10-piece limited Moritz Grossmann HAMATIC Astral Sincere Platinum Jubilee Edition will be available at Sincere Fine Watches, #01-12 of Takashimaya S.C., and the SHH Boutique, #B2M-202 of The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands, with a retail price of SGD$102,000 (including GST).
